Female Reproductive System
The female reproductive system consists of internal and external organs that play essential roles in the body’s reproductive processes. Its primary functions include enabling sexual intercourse, supporting fertility and reproduction, and regulating the menstrual cycle. Understanding how these organs work helps you monitor hormonal changes, track the phases of your cycle, and stay on top of your overall reproductive health.
External Genitalia (Vulva)
The vulva is the collective term for the external female genital organs. Its primary functions include protecting internal reproductive structures, supporting sexual function, and regulating moisture. Many people confuse the vulva with the vagina; however, the vagina is an internal canal, while the vulva includes all the structures visible externally.
Labia Majora
The labia majora, or “large lips,” are the prominent outer folds of skin surrounding the vaginal area. They protect delicate internal tissues from infections and physical irritation. These folds contain sweat and sebaceous glands, which help maintain moisture and skin integrity. During puberty, the labia majora develop pubic hair, signalling sexual maturity.
Labia Minora
Located within the labia majora, the labia minora (“small lips”) are thinner, highly sensitive folds of skin that surround both the vaginal and urethral openings. Their size, shape, and colour vary widely among individuals. The labia minora play a role in sexual stimulation and lubrication, as they contain numerous blood vessels and nerve endings.
Clitoris
The clitoris is a small, erectile organ located at the top junction of the labia minora. It’s rich in nerve endings and highly sensitive to sexual stimulation, playing a central role in sexual arousal and pleasure. The clitoris is partially covered by a protective fold of skin called the prepuce.
Vaginal Opening
The vaginal opening, also called the introitus, is the external entrance to the vagina, serving as a passage for menstrual blood, sexual intercourse, and childbirth. It’s surrounded by the labia minora and supported by the perineal muscles.
Hymen
The hymen is a thin membrane that partially covers the vaginal opening at birth. Its size, shape, and thickness vary significantly among individuals and have no direct correlation with sexual activity.
Urethral Opening
The urethral opening is a small external orifice located just above the vaginal opening through which urine exits the body. Proper hygiene is important here to help prevent urinary tract infections (UTIs).
Bartholin’s Glands
These paired glands are located near the vaginal opening and secrete mucus to maintain vaginal lubrication, especially during sexual arousal. They support comfort and protect the vulva and vaginal entrance.
Perineum
The perineum is the area between the vaginal opening and the anus. It provides structural support during childbirth and contributes to pelvic floor integrity. The perineum is also sensitive and can be involved in sexual stimulation.
Internal Reproductive Organs
The internal female reproductive organs are primarily responsible for menstruation, fertilisation, and pregnancy. These structures sit within the pelvic cavity and are interconnected to support reproductive health.
Vagina
The vagina is a muscular, flexible canal connecting the cervix (the lower part of the uterus) to the outside of the body. It serves as a passage for menstrual flow, sexual intercourse, and childbirth. The vaginal walls are lined with mucous membranes that maintain moisture and a healthy microbiome, helping protect against infections. Its elasticity allows it to stretch during childbirth and accommodate items such as tampons or medical instruments.
Cervix
The cervix is the lower, narrow portion of the uterus that opens into the vagina. It contains a small central opening called the cervical os, which allows sperm to enter the uterus and menstrual blood to exit. The cervix also produces cervical mucus, which changes in consistency across the menstrual cycle to either promote or prevent fertilisation. During childbirth, the cervix dilates to allow the baby to pass through. Uterus
The uterus is a hollow, pear-shaped organ made up of two main parts: the cervix and the corpus (body). Its primary role is to support fetal development during pregnancy. Its inner lining, the endometrium, thickens each menstrual cycle to prepare for implantation of a fertilised egg. Ovaries
The ovaries are small, almond-shaped glands located on either side of the uterus. They produce eggs (ova) and secrete hormones such as estrogen and progesterone, which regulate the menstrual cycle, sexual development, and fertility. Each ovary releases an egg roughly once per cycle during ovulation — the process essential for reproduction. Conditions such as PCOS can disrupt this process, making ovulation less predictable.
Fallopian Tubes
The fallopian tubes are narrow, tubular structures connecting the ovaries to the uterus. After ovulation, the egg travels through a fallopian tube, where fertilisation by sperm usually occurs.
